About this tour
This seven-hour route runs south through ancient Ionia to two sites that rival anything on the standard circuit: Miletus, the philosopher's city with its magnificent Greco-Roman theatre, and Didyma, where the colossal Temple of Apollo housed one of the most consulted oracles of antiquity. The trade is honest: more driving, vastly emptier sites. You walk among column drums as wide as a dinner table for eight, at a temple that was among the largest ever attempted by the Greek world, often in near silence. With a private guide the drives become part of the day, Ionian history unrolling along the Meander valley, and a separate professional driver means the guide's attention never leaves you.

Ephesus Ancient City, walked downhill
Twenty minutes from the port, about two hours from the upper gate down to the Grand Theatre.

Drive south to Miletus
About an hour along the Meander valley to the theatre and city of Thales.

Didyma and lunch
Thirty minutes on to the Temple of Apollo, with a traditional Turkish lunch at a local restaurant nearby, included in the rate.

Return to Kuşadası port
About an hour and 15 minutes, planned so you reach the port with a safe margin.

The walk, illustrated

Your private vehicle drops you at the top of Ephesus Ancient City and collects you at the bottom. About 1.5 kilometres of downhill walking, no climbing back.

What the extra cost actually buys is not a better guide. It is about ninety minutes.
A coach excursion and a private day visit the same ruins. The difference is what happens between the ruins.

Add the House of the Virgin Mary or the Terrace Houses and the regrouping cycle starts again at each stop, so the gap widens rather than closes.
Two honest notes. A coach day is not all waste: some guests genuinely want the free time at the Lower Gate, and a private tour still stops for coffee and a toilet. And these are our own timings from twenty-five years at this port, not a published study.
